Yesterday, after the final event of the big Rydberg-Gibbons wedding weekend, I laid down on the couch ready to watch the Rays and relax away the rest of Memorial Day.
One problem, the Rays didn’t start until 6:40.
Isn’t there a rule somewhere that big American Holidays have to be coupled with day baseball? If there isn’t, there should be. Perhaps we should add it to Senator Crash Davis’ proposed Constitutional Amendment prohibiting Astroturf and the Designated Hitter.
The Rays have already played 22 day games this year. That puts them on pace for 67 day starts, 20 more than they have averaged over the last 10 years. Some of that increase is caused by weather. Some of it appears to be caused by a renewed emphasis on day-game getaway days. Regardless, more day baseball is a good thing and, it should start with all the major holidays.
What time are we playing on July 4?

couldn’t agree more. i was excited to watch baseball yesterday, and espn had college softball on all day. which is like thinking you’re going to a concert, but ending up at a karaoke bar instead.
It was crazy. The lack of baseball left me with no protection in the order. I could not escape a couch-shopping trip with the Mrs. Not a good show.
It’s a great benefit of the Yankees. Loads of day games…unless you are playing a getaway game at the Trop which has to be played at night.
Or a random Spring Training game, on a Tuesday.
