I remember when I first heard about the trade sending Delmon to Minnesota. I was shocked. Couldn’t believe it. I knew Matt Garza was a top pitching prospect, but let’s face it, those types often don’t pan out. And Bartlett? Another mediocre shortstop. I’m glad my initial thoughts may have been wrong. I think Delmon will still become a good player, but maybe not as good as his first season would have suggested. I have to say I’m happy with the trade now.
It’s funny. I was shocked by the trade too but for a completely different reason. I was never a believer in Delmon but that was the first time in club history that the [Devil]Rays made two shocking admissions: 1) Not everyone with potential will pan out; and 2) A guy’s personality matters.
Prior to the Delmon deal, this franchise was crippled by unrealized potential and bad guys. Delmon may have been the deal that turned the corner.
