Despite the media’s recent obsession with the Rays’ postseason pitching rotation, we are not the only club with issues to resolve before October.
Look no further to the Division-leading New York Yankees.
Not only did their ace get shelled by Baltimore earlier this week, but their supposed number 1(a)– AJ Burnett — has been well, terrible. (5.15 ERA, 9.8 H/9, 1.83 SO/BB, 78 ERA +).
Now comes news that they are going to skip Phil Hughes’ next start, at Texas, out of concerns about his workload.
New York can downplay this story all they want but, they would not skip Hughes in a big game at Texas if they weren’t really worried.
Add in the uncertain status of Andy Pettite and you have to wonder, who has bigger postseason pitching worries: A team with one certain commodity going into October (Sabathia), or a team with one worry heading into October (Niemann)?
