With the success of Moneyball, the movie, some folks have been speculating whether Jonah Keri’s outstanding book about the Rays will follow Moneyball to the big screen.

Last night, I couldn’t help but think that Jonah wishes he wrote about 2011, not 2008.  Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t change a thing about The Extra 2%.  Loved it.  Nevertheless, if you were setting up a screenplay, aren’t the 2011 Rays the perfect candidate?

Cue that awesome movie-preview voiceover guy or NFL Films voice guy from the action movies:

Written off during the winter;

Unable to afford top talent;

The 2011 Rays believed when no one else believed;

They fought when no one else thought it was worthwhile;

Then … they turned a triple-play.

I mean, come on, a triple play?  Followed by a three-run bomb?  If you saw that in a movie you’d tell your wife/girlfriend/kid/person sitting next to you “yeah, like that could really happen.”  Nothing that dramatic ever happens in real life.  It’s almost like going to a prize fight and watching two heavyweights lead with their head in a 10-round punch fest like Apollo and Rocky.  It’s not real, that is what we love about the movies.

But this IS real.  I guess.  I mean, I heard it on the radio.  Then I saw it in the newspaper.  Those guys couldn’t be conspiring against me, right?  RIGHT?  That happened.  I know it. If I have to wear a tin-foil hat for believing it, then size me up and put a TB on the front.

We have to make this happen.  I need titles for the 2011 Rays Movie. After we throw together a screenplay, I want one of those cool cloth director chairs too.

  1. Bill says:

    TITLE: “GORAYS”

    PLOT: A three year old little girl is granted magical powers by her godmother. Every time she says “GORAYS” something improbable happens.
    In game seven of the World series her little sister runs around the bases in the baby brothers room just before B.J. hits an inside the park home run for them win.
