When Joe Maddon made an early visit to his traveling wine room Tuesday night, he tied a franchise “record” of sorts. Maddon has now been tossed from 15 games, the same number of times Larry Rothschild got run.

DRaysBay had this observation on the milestone:

Joe Maddon’s ejection in the fifth inning last night tied him with Larry Rothschild for the franchise record with 15. Somehow this surprises me; I can’t believe Lou Piniella didn’t get thrown out more during his time with us.

This “statistic” doesn’t measure anything objectively but, I think it is fair to say that it speaks to the level of Lou’s engagement during his time at the helm. Lou never wanted to manage here. When he forced his way out of Seattle, he wanted to manage the Mets. That fell through so he settled for the Rays. He tried to put his heart into the team but he just didn’t care so he rarely got worked up enough to get ejected.

By the way, I wish there was a way to research the Rays’ record in games that Maddon gets run. For some reason, I have the impression that he is an incredibly effective arguer. (note, arguer is not a word).
